Prison Door examines the relationship between architectural detail and control by focusing on the design of maximum-security prison doors. Through drawings based on off-the-shelf prison door details, the project reveals how architecture—through its materials, detailing, and organization—actively shapes social, psychological, and environmental aspects of daily life.
This exploration specifically addresses the carceral system, highlighting how architectural elements are deliberately designed to regulate behavior, enforce security, and exert psychological control. The extreme environment of maximum-security imprisonment makes these mechanisms explicit, but the underlying principles extend beyond prisons, influencing built environments more broadly.
By exposing the power embedded in architectural detailing, Prison Door prompts a critical reflection on how design dictates human experience, not only in spaces of confinement but in everyday life.
