Handelsresanden is a 27m2 addition and renovation of a 85m2 single family home in Hökarängen, a postwar suburb in the south of Stockholm. The existing house is a self-built home from the early 1940’s, one of many in a historically landmarked area. The addition is defined by one large volume (27 sm) that extends directly behind the existing house into the garden and is not visible from the street in elevation. It has a lower roof pitch and in accordance with the planning documents is offset inwards from the width of the existing house by 500mm on one side. Like Torö, this project works to adapt the existing architecture to varying social and family constellations through visible structural alterations. The altered structure and new volume enables larger interior social areas - a new living room in the extension, an altered kitchen and dining room.
